Breakout 304: Lateral Violence & Incivility

02:00 PM 03:00 PM Napa

In this presentation student nurses will learn about the prevalence of bullying during clinical experiences and strategies will be discussed for combating bullying in the clinical setting and making the most of the student's experiences. Bullying among nurses is not a new phenomenon but it is time to try and learn more about the potential trigger and solutions and enact policy change in the hospital which includes a "no tolerance" attitude. The most recent Gallop poll for 2017 ranked nurses as the most trusted profession with the highest levels of ethics and honesty. (Allen & Byrd, 2016) Despite nursing being a high-ranking profession, there is a prevalence of workplace bullying and incivility within the profession. Studies have shown that the results of nurse bullying not only has consequences for the nurse, but in terms of patient safety. (Castronovo, Pullizzi & Evans, 2015). The occurrence of bullying or lateral violence may contribute to sentinel events and poor patient outcomes (Blair, 2013). While there is evidence and research to show that workplace bullying exists among healthcare workers, there is limited research on the prevalence of these behaviors aimed at student nurses and the effects of students being the object of such lateral violence.
